Association Apairy
The ABKA Association Apiary is an important part of our learning and mentoring activities. It provides a place where members can observe colonies, develop practical skills, ask questions and learn from more experienced beekeepers in a supportive setting.
Beekeeping is best learned through a combination of good teaching, careful observation and hands-on experience. The Association Apiary helps members build confidence at a steady pace while learning how to care for bees responsibly and safely.
A Place for Shared Learning
The apiary gives members an opportunity to see seasonal beekeeping in practice.
Depending on the time of year, visits may include:
- observing colony development
- understanding hive inspections
- recognising brood, stores and queen activity
- learning about swarm prevention and control
- discussing bee health and disease awareness
- handling frames safely and calmly
- preparing colonies for different stages of the season
- learning from questions and discussion
Every visit is an opportunity to learn something new.
Native Irish Honey Bee
ABKA supports the conservation and promotion of the native Irish honey bee, Apis mellifera mellifera.
Where appropriate, the Association Apiary helps members learn about the importance of native bee conservation, thoughtful colony management and the role local beekeepers can play in supporting Ireland’s native honey bee.
Attending Apiary Sessions
Association Apiary visits may be arranged during the active beekeeping season and are usually weather-dependent.
Because bees should not be opened in unsuitable conditions, sessions may occasionally be changed, postponed or cancelled at short notice due to weather, colony condition or safety considerations.
Members should check event details before attending and follow any instructions circulated by ABKA.
What to Bring
For apiary visits, members may be asked to bring:
- a clean bee suit or protective clothing
- suitable gloves
- sturdy footwear
- a notebook, if desired
- any personal medication required, such as an allergy pen if prescribed
- a calm and respectful approach around the bees
