Beginner Beekeeping Course
Starting Your Beekeeping Journey
If you are new to beekeeping, our beginner training is the best place to start. The course introduces the fundamentals of honey bee biology, hive management, seasonal care and the practical skills needed to become a responsible beekeeper.
You do not need to own bees before taking part. In fact, we strongly encourage beginners to learn first, gain practical experience and take time before deciding whether to keep their own colonies.
Learning With ABKA
Learn by Doing
Beekeeping is best learned through a combination of knowledge and practical experience. Throughout the year, ABKA members have opportunities to learn from experienced beekeepers, attend talks and demonstrations, and take part in practical sessions at the Association Apiary.
Our aim is not simply to teach techniques, but to help members develop good judgement, confidence and an understanding of the bees themselves.

Responsible Beekeeping
Good beekeeping means more than managing a hive. It involves understanding the bees, responding appropriately to seasonal conditions, protecting colony health and considering the wider environment.
ABKA encourages thoughtful, responsible beekeeping and the conservation and promotion of our native dark honey bee, Apis mellifera mellifera.
