Introduction to Beekeeping

Have you ever wondered what happens inside a beehive, how honey is made, or how bees support our environment and biodiversity?

The Ashford Beekeepers Association (ABKA) Introduction to Beekeeping Course is designed for anyone interested in learning about honey bees and the rewarding craft of beekeeping. Whether you are considering keeping bees yourself or simply want to better understand these remarkable insects, this course provides a friendly and supportive introduction.

The course combines classroom-based learning with practical apiary experience and is suitable for complete beginners. No previous knowledge or experience is required.

What the Course Covers

Over a series of evening lectures and a practical apiary session, participants will be introduced to:

• The fascinating life and behaviour of the honey bee
• The role of bees in nature and pollination
• The seasonal cycle of a beehive
• Beekeeping equipment and hive types
• Safe and responsible hive management
• Swarming and colony behaviour
• Honey production and harvesting
• The importance of supporting and conserving the Native Irish Honey Bee (Apis mellifera mellifera)

The course also includes a guided practical visit to an association apiary (weather permitting), where participants will gain hands-on experience working with bees under supervision.

Participants are supported not only during the course itself, but also through the wider ABKA community, where experienced members are always willing to share advice, encouragement, and practical help.
