A friendly and practical introduction for anyone interested in honey bees and beekeeping.
What the Course Covers
Over a series of evening lectures and a practical apiary session, participants will be introduced to:
- The fascinating life and behaviour of the honey bee
- The role of bees in nature and pollination
- The seasonal cycle of a beehive
- Beekeeping equipment and hive types
- Safe and responsible hive management
- Swarming and colony behaviour
- Honey production and harvesting
- The importance of supporting and conserving the Native Irish Honey Bee (Apis mellifera mellifera)
The course also includes a guided practical visit to an association apiary (weather permitting), where participants will gain hands-on experience working with bees under supervision.
Learning Approach
Our aim is to make beekeeping accessible, enjoyable, and approachable for everyone. The course is delivered in a relaxed and friendly environment where questions and discussion are encouraged.
Participants are supported not only during the course itself, but also through the wider ABKA community, where experienced members are always willing to share advice, encouragement, and practical help.
We recommend the Haynes Bee Manual as an excellent beginner reference book for new beekeepers.
Meet Your Instructor — Colm Penston
Colm Penston has been keeping bees for over 10 years and manages apiaries across County Wicklow and surrounding areas. His lifelong fascination with bees has grown into a deep commitment to beekeeping, education, and the protection of our natural environment.
Holding a Diploma in Apiculture from the University of Galway, Colm combines scientific knowledge with extensive practical experience in the apiary. As an active member of ABKA, he continues to learn from and contribute to the wider beekeeping community.
Colm is known for his friendly and practical teaching style, helping newcomers build confidence and understanding step-by-step. Alongside hive management skills, he places strong emphasis on responsible beekeeping, environmental awareness, and the conservation of the Native Irish Honey Bee.
Above all, Colm believes that beekeeping should be rewarding, respectful, and rooted in cooperation with nature.
